You can tell by their faces how they`re doing. Hello everyone, thank you for the warm welcome! Portrait expressions reflect the current status of your characters, so you can see at a glance whether they’re looking okay, a little bit peaky but still able to act, or whether they’re totally stricken and unable to do anything.
你可以通过角色的头像来判断他们在做什么。角色的头像可以表现出角色现在的状态,因此你可以看一眼就知道你的角色现在是还行,有点惨或是已经快要不行了。
This is a draft of what a female Dwarf might look like under good conditions (left) and in different states of despair. Not all expressions have made it to the game though; this is merely to show what work in progress can look like.

So your opinions on portrait expressions have been taken into account when we discussed the topic within the team. At the very beginning of the project, no expressions were planned at all, but due to fan feedback, we decided they are too important to leave them out. We chose to have three different states that a character can have: neutral (a serene face), peaky (hurt, with a strained expression) and knocked out (hurt and with eyes closed). These three different expressions carry the most important information about the status of your characters: are they alright, or just a little beat up but still able to fight, or are they out for the time being?

In order to find out what exactly hit your characters (are they stunned, paralyzed etc.), you can either use the information provided by tooltip or check the character sheet.
However, the different states of strainedness are just the cherry on the cake. There has been a lot of work going on in order to make the different character portraits unique and expressive as they are. This is what it looks like when artists work on developing characters:
